Healthcare Professionals From Around the World Volunteer in Ukraine

The MedCV Team would like to highlight the contributions of the clinicians and healthcare professionals providing aid in Ukraine.

As of March 7th, more than 20,000 people from 52 countries have volunteered to fight in Ukraine as part of the Ukrainian International Legion.  Alongside them are foreign medical professionals volunteering in both combat and humanitarian-focused medical roles. While much of the focus has been placed on the harrowing footage coming out of Ukraine and the live campaign map, the Ukrainian people are undoubtably grateful for those healthcare professionals volunteering to help alleviate the growing humanitarian crisis.

On Feb 27th, just days after Russia began major combat operations in the country, Ukraine’s Ministry of Health opened invitations to foreign medical professionals to assist in Ukrainian hospitals. By March 3rd, over 500 foreign doctors from places such as Australia, the EU, Great Britain, Switzerland, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Israel, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Jordan, Brazil had answered the call, according to a report from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Aside from the individual volunteers, there have been many charitable organizations willing to put boots on the ground in and around Ukraine. Doctors Without Borders (also known as Médecins Sans Frontières or MSF) has been in Ukraine since the conflict first began in 2014. They’ve recently had to shift focus from treating patients with chronic diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis to providing emergency medical care and treating traumatic injuries, as well tending to the needs of refugees and those who’ve been displaced due to the fighting.

MSF has been continually delivering medical supplies to the Ukrainian Ministry of Health in Kyiv, including a recent shipment of 1,400 Cubic feet of medical supplies. Additionally, experienced MSF medical staff continue to arrive in Ukraine daily to support their staff already in country.

A smaller organization helping with the crisis is UK Med, a 5-man team From Manchester, UK that has been helping to organize, coordinate, and build field hospitals for refugees along the Polish-Ukrainian border. A recent blog post on their website includes updates and details on what they’re doing and the situation in the region, which you can read here.

The team at MedCV has been watching these developments closely, and wanted to share these stories with our community with the goal of showcasing some of the great things physicians and healthcare professionals have been doing. We know that most people cannot simply leave their lives and families behind to do these kinds of things, even if they want to. We hope that you will find this inspiring and will serve as a reminder of why we entered the healthcare profession: to help the people who need it the most.
